Sunscreen Ingredients Denver Patients Should Actually Stop Using

If you've had any laser or resurfacing work done at AOB — MOXI, HALO, BBL Hero — you've heard us say the same thing every single time: sunscreen isn't optional, it's part of the treatment. But here's what we don't always get to explain in a five-minute post-care conversation: not all sunscreens are created equal, and some of the most popular drugstore formulas are actively working against your skin, especially right now, post-procedure, at 5,280 feet.

We see it constantly. A patient does everything right — books the treatment, follows the aftercare sheet, shows up for the follow-up — and then reaches for whatever SPF was already sitting in their bathroom cabinet. Weeks later, they're back in the treatment room asking why their pigmentation looks uneven or why their skin feels irritated in a way it didn't before. Almost every time, the sunscreen is part of the story.

Chemical sunscreens: the ingredient list worth questioning

Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays and converting them to heat, which then releases from the skin. The active ingredients doing that job — oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate — are effective at blocking UV, but they come with two problems that matter more for our patients than for the general population.

First, the heat-conversion process itself can be a problem for skin that's already inflamed or in a healing state. If you're within a week or two of MOXI, HALO, or a chemical peel, that heat generation can aggravate compromised skin and slow the healing process you just paid for.

Second, several chemical filters are known irritants and hormone disruptors in sensitized or reactive skin. Patients managing rosacea or melasma — a condition we talk about often because it's so common at altitude — tend to react poorly to oxybenzone specifically. It can trigger the exact inflammatory response that worsens pigmentation. If you've been chasing stubborn melasma that won't budge, your sunscreen ingredient list may be quietly working against every other treatment you're doing.

Mineral sunscreen: why we recommend it after nearly everything

Mineral (sometimes called physical) sunscreens use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them. There's no heat-conversion step, no penetration into the skin barrier, and a much lower irritation profile. That's precisely why mineral formulas are the standard recommendation after nearly every treatment we perform — post-laser, post-peel, post-microneedling, and honestly, as a daily habit for anyone with reactive or sensitive skin.

So when patients ask us mineral vs. chemical sunscreen, which is better for sensitive or post-procedure skin — the answer is almost always mineral. It's gentler, it's more stable in Denver's intense high-altitude UV, and it doesn't interfere with skin that's actively rebuilding collagen or resolving inflammation.

The best sunscreen after laser treatment isn't complicated — it's specific

If you've recently had HALO, MOXI, or BBL Hero, your skin barrier is temporarily more permeable and more sensitive to both UV exposure and chemical irritants. The best sunscreen after laser treatment checks three boxes: 100% mineral (zinc oxide, ideally 15%+), fragrance-free, and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Skip anything with added actives — retinol-infused SPFs, alpha hydroxy acids, or fragrance for "spa-like" scent — until your provider clears you to resume your full routine. This is a moment where simpler is genuinely better.

This matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country. We've written before about how SPF ratings can be confusing at Denver's altitude, and how altitude accelerates skin aging faster than most patients expect. UV intensity increases roughly 4-6% for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain — which means Denver skin is taking a harder UV hit than the same skin would at sea level, laser or no laser. Pair that with a chemical sunscreen that's irritating already-sensitive post-treatment skin, and you've got a recipe for setbacks that are entirely preventable.
